It might be his third season, but Max Christie is just getting started and has an opportunity to reach new heights for the Lakers this year.

Max Christie is entering his third season as a Laker, but this appears to be the first time he’ll have a significant role.

Last year, he rode the bench and only got an extended look when player were out due to injury.

Once they were healthy, he was back to sitting on the sidelines and observing regardless of how well he played on the floor.

The Lakers made it clear that his playing time did not reflect how much they valued him and they proved it by signing Christie to a four-year, $32 million deal this summer.

With a new contract and head coach JJ Redick singing his praises, Christie’s future seems as bright as the California sun.

Still, when talking with Spectrum on Media Day, Christie made it clear he is far from satisfied and understands the time is now to prove himself.

“I think what a lot will do sometimes when you get that achievement, you get that contract, everybody kind of starts to slow down,” Christie said. “You think you made it. For me, personally, I don’t think I’ve proved a lot in this league as a player. I’ve put in a lot of work behind the scenes and I think I’ve controlled everything that I can and I think that’s helped me stay with this team and, thankfully, earn the trust of everybody upstairs in this organization.

“But again, I still haven’t proved a lot as a player playing actually games. I’ve had some moments, but I’ve never really played a full season yet. Hopefully, this season is that season for me and I’m looking forward to making my mark. I’ve been working for this for the past two years. It’s really been preparing me for this. The past years haven’t been a waste whatsoever. Even though I haven’t played it’s kind of prepared me for this and I feel super ready for it.”

With a bigger role comes more responsibilities. Christie had a good first day of training camp and while he didn’t make Redick’s starting five, he will likely be one of the first reserves off the bench to start this season.

Does this mean Christie is destined for a breakout this year?

Fans certainly hope so, but for every young Lakers player who pans out, there are several who don’t.

Christie has the right mindset, secured the bag and the minutes are coming. Let’s hope the 2024-25 season is his coming-out party.
