Arsenal legend says Postecoglou has ‘unearthed’ his very own Kai Havertz at Spurs
Ian Wright is thoroughly impressed with how one Tottenham man is doing in his new position.
New lease of life
After an outstanding start to his Tottenham career when he arrived from Juventus in January of 2022, Kulusevski had gone a bit off the boil over the last two seasons.
While the Swede was producing occasional moments of magic, he struggled for consistency, with many having doubts over whether he was suited to playing as a winger in Ange Postecoglou’s system.
The Australian has decided to move to 24-year-old to the number eight role this season and that has worked a treat, with the player now influencing games a lot more and adding a new dimension to Tottenham’s attack.
Wright impressed by what he has seen
Wright stated that Kulusevski looks like a player re-born in the central role, admitting that he has been thoroughly impressed by the Tottenham man.
The former Arsenal man suggested that the Sweden international’s attributes make him ‘perfect’ for the number eight role.
Wright told Premier League Productions (30/09/24 at 1:15 pm): “Especially Kulusevski dropping off into that eight, it looks like a whole new offensive player in that area of the field.
“To have a player with that type of capability, everyone thinks he is a winger coming in off the right-hand side. But to be able to drop back. It’s Kai Havertz type of energy. He can come in down the right, of course, Kai can play down the centre as well.
“But for him (Kulusevski), with his technical ability, pace and his passing ability. It was perfect for him. They have really unearthed something with him playing in the eight there.”
Kulusevski’s favourite position
Kulusevski certainly appears to be enjoying his football a lot more in his new position, with the Swede now being able to get on the ball more often.
He admitted to the club’s official website that he is now playing his right position, confessing that he is able to operate centrally since he has improved the defensive side of his game.
Kulusevski also stated in that interview that he feels it is difficult for opposition midfielders to keep up with him for 90 minutes, adding that he is keen to test them.
He said: “I always want to go forward. I train to never be tired so, I can do it all game and it’s hard for midfielders if they have to track me back for 90 minutes. You know, I really want to question them and ask them, ‘how hard are you working?'”
