Melania claims she got husband to 'swiftly comply' with dropping controversial policy

Former first lady Melania Trump is claiming in her new book that she personally convinced former President Donald Trump to drop one of his most controversial policies.

As The Guardian puts it, Melania claims she got Trump to "quickly comply" with her demand to end his policy of separating immigrant children from their parents when they crossed the border into the United States.

Specifically, Melania says she told her husband that "this has to stop" regarding the family separation policies, while also “emphasizing the trauma it was causing these families."

Additionally, Melania says she expressed concern about "the lack of a clear plan for reuniting families and the absence of a definitive policy on these separations," which she said "only added to the public’s outrage."

This professed care for immigrant families seemingly contradicts the message that she sent in 2018 when she traveled to visit immigrant detention facilities while wearing a jacket with the words, "I really don't care, do u?" written on the back.

Regardless, the former first lady says that the controversy over family separation was one of a handful of times when she disagreed with his policies.

“Occasional political disagreements between me and my husband were a part of our relationship," Melania explains. “But I believed in addressing them privately rather than publicly challenging him. I found our discussions more productive when we could have a quiet dialogue at home, out of the public eye.”
