Blue-green algae bloom back at Pontoosuc Lake in Pittsfield
PITTSFIELD, Mass. (NEWS10) -- Officials with the city of Pittsfield announced that a blue-green algae bloom has once again been detected at Pontoosuc Lake. A public health advisory was issued on October 4.
The blue-green algae was found in the lake on September 18. The initial health advisory was lifted on October 1 after test results showed that the algae had diminished, however, further testing this week revealed that the algae was still present.
Contact or consumption of algal-present water can result in medical issues for both humans and animals. Residents are reminded to avoid contact with the water and to refrain from any activities on the lake. Warning signs will be posted in the area.
Anyone experiencing symptoms should contact Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222, or contact your veterinarian if a pet has symptoms. Further questions can be directed to the Pittsfield Health Department at (413)499-9411.
