Poughkeepsie man extradited from Florida in shots fired investigation
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- The Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department (TPPD) announced an arrest has been made in a longstanding shots fired investigation. Scott Schunzel, 31, of Poughkeepsie, is facing multiple charges.
On March 16 around 11:42 p.m., police responded to the Cherry Hill Condominiums following reports of gunfire in the area. Arriving officers located bullet strikes to the facade of an occupied apartment and to an unoccupied parked car in the vicinity, but no injuries were reported.
The ensuing investigation resulted in Schunzel being identified as a suspect in June, but TPPD learned that he had reportedly since fled to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Schunzel was taken into custody by the Fort Lauderdale Police Department on June 21, who held him while awaiting extradition back to New York.
Schunzel was turned over to TPPD on September 30. He now faces the following charges:
- Second-degree criminal possession of a weapon
- First-degree reckless endangerment
- Two counts of third-degree criminal mischief
Schunzel was arraigned at the Town of Poughkeepsie Justice Court. He was then remanded to the Dutchess County Justice and Transition Center on $100,000 cash bail, $200,000 bond, and $400,000 partially secured bond.
The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact TPPD detectives at (845)485-3666.
