1 dead following stabbing near North I-35; suspect taken into custody, APD says

AUSTIN (KXAN) — One person died Friday morning after a stabbing near North Interstate 35, in what APD said is the city's 50th homicide of the year.

APD officers responded around 10:18 a.m. to multiple 9-1-1 calls that reported a stabbing in the 6000 block of North I-35 Service Road, the agency said in a press release.

At the scene, officers found a man in his 60s with stab wounds, APD said. Austin-Travis County EMS also responded to the incident and took the man to a trauma center with critical, life-threatening injuries.

The victim was pronounced dead at 10:48 a.m., according to APD. The agency has not yet identified that victim.

APD arrested a Todd Wimberly, 31, as a suspect. He was charged by APD with one felony count of first degree murder.

APD said its officers located Wimberly walking on the frontage road. In APD's press release, it alleges that Wimberly "had a significant amount of blood on him" and was carrying a bloody knife.

APD asked for anyone with information about the stabbing to contact it at 512-974-TIPS, or anonymously at austincrimestoppers.org or 512-472-8477.
