Former Man Utd starlet opens door for Old Trafford return after England debut last month
Former Manchester United starlet Angel Gomes is in the England squad for this month’s Nations League matches against Greece and Finland.
Gomes made his full England debut in the 2-0 win over Finland last month.
Speaking to Times Sport, Gomes refused to rule out a return to United after starring for LOSC Lille.
He said: “There’ll always be that sentimental soft spot, so of course it’d be difficult to say no.
“As amazing as it would be, after finding happiness abroad I know [playing in the Premier League] is not the be-all and end-all.”
Gomes rose through the ranks at United before moving to Lille on a free transfer in 2020.
He debuted for the Red Devils against Crystal Palace in 2017 by coming on for Wayne Rooney.
Gomes became United’s youngest-ever Premier League player and made ten first-team appearances for his boyhood club.
He has revitalised his career in France, notching two goals and ten assists last season.
Half of his assists came when he played as a central midfielder. He played the same role for the Three Lions, partnering Declan Rice in a two-man midfield.
United currently have a big pool of midfielders, courtesy of Kobbie Mainoo’s breakthrough and Manuel Ugarte’s arrival this summer.
However, Casemiro and Christian Eriksen could leave the club next summer.
Eriksen is in the final year of his contract, and there have been no talks to extend his deal.
Gomes may want to return to the Premier League to stay in the limelight after getting a taste of international football.
United lack a player who can sit deep and control the game, and Gomes could fit into that role.
