Milton rapidly strengthens into a hurricane, expected to become a major hurricane
Milton has rapidly organized overnight and through today. Yesterday, it was named a tropical storm and today it is already a hurricane.
Here's the latest 4 p.m. advisory from the National Hurricane Center.
Milton is expected to continue to intensify with a jet streak to its north, allowing for ventilation aloft and a favorable upper-level wind profile. It will also move over a warm eddy of water and higher tropical cyclone heat potential by Tuesday.
Unfortunately, a major hurricane is expected at landfall at this point, with a category three or four possible. The hurricane may reach peak intensity on Tuesday, as it moves over these warm waters of the Gulf.
