United favour 48yo as caretaker if Erik ten Hag leaves after today's executive meeting - report
Manchester United are scheduled to hold an executive summit in London later today.
The Red Devils have had a poor start to the Premier League season with only eight points from seven games and this has led to doubts regarding Erik ten Hag’s position as manager.
There has been no indication that he will be sacked, but should that happen, assistant Ruud van Nistelrooy could get the job as a caretaker if time is needed to appoint a permanent replacement.
The Guardian add that the former United striker could also be considered for the job on a long-term basis, should he manage the club’s fortunes like Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the past.
United have big decision to make after executive meeting
The Red Devils have performed below expectations during the ongoing campaign and they are already playing catch-up to the Champions League places with a six-point gap.
As of Monday, Ten Hag’s position is reportedly safe, but a final decision on his future could be made after today’s meeting where co-owners Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Joel Glazer will be present.
Ratcliffe and INEOS placed their trust and faith on Ten Hag after the 3-0 rout by Liverpool last month. CEO Omar Berrada came up with a public statement backing the Dutchman.
It remains to be seen whether there will a similar response today or a change is made. INEOS are yet to hold formal talks with Thomas Tuchel following a meeting in the summer, as per The Guardian.
Hence, there is a good possibility that Van Nistelrooy could be named caretaker if Ten Hag leaves. The 48-year-old won the Dutch Cup during his time at PSV where his playing style was appreciated.
He could be handed the opportunity to audition for the managerial role in the short term.
