Family shares heartbreaking photos of student nurse, 19, left fighting for life after hit-and-run horror crash
A FAMILY has shared heartbreaking pictures of her student nurse daughter after she was left fighting for life in a horror hit-and-run.
Freya Theobold was a passenger in a Ford Fiesta when a stolen Land Rover smashed head-on into the car while being chased by police.
The 19-year-old suffered a fractured spine, a collapsed lung, a split bowel and a bleed on the brain following the horror last Monday.
Her dad Tom and stepmum Jolene have now released heartbreaking photos of Freya after she was placed in an induced coma.
The student nurse can be seen hooked up to tubes as she fights for life in Birmingham’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
Jolene, 45, said: “Freya had been at work looking after palliative care patients and was getting a lift home with a colleague.
“The stolen car went over the central reservation and into their lane. It went straight into them.
“She had to be cut out of the car because she was stuck inside.
“The car was completely crumpled. She was only in a little Fiesta and the whole front of the car was missing.”
Jolene said Freya had emergency surgery on her bowel after it split in two and now has a nail in her femur.
She underwent emergency surgery but is still waiting for an operation on her spine.
Doctors are now reducing Freya’s sedation, which means she has woken up a few times.
Jolene added: “When she does wake up she’s generally panicked. They’ve said she was very lucky.
“The doctors have said she’s very fragile and vulnerable at the moment.
“Her colleague managed to walk away without any injuries. She saw the car coming towards them and swerved.
“She’s worked so hard, and for her to be out there helping others and this happened, it’s unbelievable.”
An 18-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of vehicle theft and dangerous driving but has been released on bail.
Freya was working as a carer and two weeks into a nursing degree when the horror unfolded on Stafford Road in Wolverhampton.
Dad Tom, a gas and plumbing engineer, said: “Freya’s whole life has changed. Her life won’t be the same.
“Mentally she’s not going to be the same either.
“I nearly lost my daughter to this and it’s going to be a long process. I just want justice for Freya.”
A GoFundMe page launched to help Freya’s family has so far reached almost £6,000.
