Tottenham one of three Premier League clubs scouting Europa League game
The Europa League is now well underway, and clubs are not only focused on their own games but are sending scouts to watch other games in the competition.
Spurs were one of three clubs to send representatives to the recent clash between Elsfborg and Roma, but perhaps for different reasons than their Premier League rivals.
Spurs witness shock in Sweden
It has been a successful start to the Europa League for Spurs so far, with two wins from two against Azerbaijan outfit Qarabag and Hungarian champions Ferencvaros.
No game in the competition is easy, and Tottenham will have sterner tests ahead for sure. But, the club has been closely studying the progress of two of their future opponents already to ensure they are well prepared.
According to a report from Aftonbladet (via Sport Witness), Spurs scouts were present at the recent clash between Elfsborg and Roma at the Borås Arena on Thursday night.
The Swedish hosts ended up winning the game 1-0 in a shock result that will have left Roma and the watching Tottenham scouts with plenty to digest.
Spurs have to play both those teams in the league phase of the competition, and would have been expecting a comfortable win over Elsfborg.
Man Utd and Bournemouth watching, for different reasons
The report adds that Manchester United and Bournemouth also sent representatives to watch the game last week, though it is thought they were there with a different intent in mind.
Elfsborg coach Oscar Hiljemark is now believed to be on the radar of a number of clubs across Europe after guiding his team into continental competition and pulling off this big result.
Apparently, players like Besfort Zeneli, Timothy Ouma, and Michael Baidoo are all wanted by top clubs now, too, with Bologna, Genoa, and Real Sociedad also in attendance to see their latest triumph.
Europa League is a tricky competition
Tottenham will host Roma on November 28, while Elfsborg will also travel to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the New Year, on January 30.
If we have learned anything this week, it’s that every game in the Europa League is incredibly difficult. Ferencvaros gave us a really tough time, and Roma have been well and truly upset by Elfsborg there. We will have to be at our best to beat them both.
