When will Portland's 80-degree heat end?
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- Early October heat continues to build across the Pacific Northwest as 80-degree temperatures remain Monday.
Monday's afternoon highs worked towards the low 80s once more. Now a week into the typically cooler month of October, Oregonians should be thinking about sweaters and scarves and not shorts and sunglasses.
October's 80-degree heat isn't unheard of around Portland. It was just last year that Portland saw a record broken for October 7, 2023 when afternoon highs hit 85 degrees. Monday's temperatures got close to that record, but remained well above the average of 68-degrees for the first seven days into the new month.
Sweater weather returns later this week as temperatures are expected to fall nearly 10-degrees over the next 24 hours. Portland's afternoon highs will sit closer to average by the middle of the week with the chance of a few light sprinkles.
Portland and much of the Willamette Valley typically see the final 80-degree temperature of the season on September 28. We're now well past that date with summer still trying to hold on.
The next big temperature milestone is the final 70-degree day. That typically occurs on October 17. Portland's average first freezing temperature is quickly approaching as well with a November 11 average.
The Climate Prediction Center's forecast puts Portland slightly warmer than average with near normal rainfall amounts for the next two weeks. So, Pacific Northwesterners should expect a gradual cooling trend this October and a handful of above average days in the next two weeks.
