70-year-old UK woman receives information about job she applied for 48 years ago; here’s ‘why and what happened’

New Delhi: Anyone who applies for a job expects to hear back within a reasonable time, whatever the feedback might be. Sometimes the waiting period gets long and heavily stretched.

For a 70-year-old woman in the United Kingdom, it was a very long wait, almost 50 years to get a reply to her job application.

The applicant, Tizi Hodson, is a resident of Lincolnshire. She had a passion for motorcycles and wanted to become a motorcycle stunt rider. So, one fine day in 1976, she wrote an application letter applying for the job. She did not receive any reply for decades.

But something else related to the job application happened, 48 years after it was sent. In 2024, the letter Tizi Hodson wrote was sent back to her because the post office found it stuck behind a drawer.

A visibly and naturally shocked Hodson, on seeing her letter after 48 years, said that its return was “amazing”. “I always wondered why I never heard back about the job. Now I know why,” she told the BBC.

Although she missed out on the job, she pursued another adventurous career. She became a snake handler, horse whisperer, aerobatic pilot, and flying instructor, and travelled around the world.

She has regrets about the letter not making it to the prospective employer and losing out on the job as she says she clearly remembers the day she wrote the job application letter.

“I remember very clearly sitting in my flat in London typing the letter. Every day I looked for my post but there was nothing there and I was so disappointed because I really, really, wanted to be a stunt rider on a motorcycle,” she told the BBC.

Hodson says that after she received the letter back after 48 years, it made her comprehend what guidance she would give to her younger self.

“If I could speak to my younger self, I would tell her to go and do everything I’ve done. I’ve had such a wonderful time in life, even if I have broken a few bones,” she told the BBC.
