Patrick Mahomes revealed Travis Kelce's fantastic lateral pass was totally improvised
During Monday night’s Chiefs-Saints matchup, Travis Kelce casually tossed a lateral pass to Samaje Perine mid-play, surprising everyone, including Patrick Mahomes.
The Chiefs were marching down the field, but a string of penalties put the team in a wild setup to get a first down. It was third -and-22 — YES, THIRD AND FOREVER — and Mahomes seemingly tried to eat into the yardage with a pass to Kelce. But Travis had other plans.
It seems he wanted the first down, and after catching the pass and running upfield, he inexplicably lateraled the ball to Samaje mid-play. What was third and a lifetime magically turned into fourth-and-one. MADNESS. Here’s Patrick trying to make sense of the play postgame, hysterically saying that talking to Travis is like talking with his daughter:
“I told him before the play — I said, ‘I’m [going to] throw it to you. So, we can get in field goal range.’ And he underhand shoveled it across the the entire field…”
“It’s like I’m talking to, like, Sterling…That’s Travis, man. He’s a special player. [As] long as he does it and it works, man, no one’s going to say anything.”
