49ers find familiar foot to fill in for kicker Jake Moody

SANTA CLARA — Matthew Wright will fill in for 49ers kicker Jake Moody, a year after Wright originally signed with the club in case Moody’s rookie season was delayed by a leg injury.

Wright, a team source confirmed, officially will re-sign today after winning a four-candidate audition Monday. Moody sustained a high ankle sprain to his right (kicking) leg while making a tackle on a second-quarter kickoff in Sunday’s 24-23 loss to the Arizona Cardinals.

The 49ers also worked out Randy Bullock, Anders Carlson, Matt Coghlin, and Riley Patterson, ESPN’s Adam Schefter first reported.

Last September, Wright joined the 49ers practice squad as a contingency in case Moody’s sore leg kept him out of the season opener at Pittsburgh. Moody will miss the first game of his career Thursday night when the 49ers (2-3) visit the Seattle Seahawks (3-2).

The 49ers will hold a light practice at 5:10 p.m. today, then fly Wednesday to Seattle.

Wright has made 40-of-47 field-goal attempts in his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Kansas City Chiefs and the Carolina Panthers.

Moody is 13-of-14 on field-goal attempts this season; his only miss came on a 55-yard attempt in the final minutes of a Week 3 loss at Los Angeles.
