Meet two scientists, who have won 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics, the prize money is whopping Rs….

Two scientists, John Hopfield and Geoffrey Hinton, were Tuesday declared the winner of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics for their discoveries and inventions which enable machine learning within artificial neural networks. The announcement was made by the Royal Swedish Academy, Stockholm, Sweden.

Who are John J. Hopfield and Geoffrey E. Hinton?

John J. Hopfield and Geoffrey E. Hinton, this years Nobel laureates in physics, are two physicists who employed physics tools to develop methods which enable machine learning within artificial neural networks, the award-giving body said in the announcement.

“The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics to John J. Hopfield and Geoffrey E. Hinton “for foundational discoveries and inventions that enable machine learning with artificial neural networks,” Nobel Prize wrote on its official X handle.

According to the announcement, Hopfield created an associative memory that can store and reconstruct images and other patterns in data, while Hinton invented a method which automatically finds properties in data, allowing AI-based systems to identify specific elements in pictures.

Nobel Prize in Physics cash prize

The Nobel Prize in Physics is regarded as the most prestigious award in the field of physics, and comes with a cash prize of million Swedish kronor (around $1.1 USD or Rs 8.3 crore, roughly), apart from the fame and recognition which the winners get. The cash reward is shared among winners, if there a more than as in this year’s case.

The esteemed award is awarded for exemplary work in the field of physics. In 2023, the Nobel Prize in Physics was won by three scientists who captured the first split-second glimpse of spinning electrons.

The remarkable discovery by the three Nobel laureates – Anne L’Huillier, Pierre Agostini, and Ferenc Krausz, could help in designing and improving electronics, besides helping in the diagnosis of various diseases in the near future.

The discovery is also important in nano-technology which is being is being touted as the next big leap.
