New York Jets Fire Head Coach Just Weeks Into Season
The New York Jets have made the astonishing decision to fire head coach Robert Saleh after a disastrous 2–3 start to the season, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported.
Saleh was hired as the Jets’ head coach in 2021. Since then, he’s notched an underwhelming 20–36 record. His termination is the first time Woody Johnson has fired a coach mid-season in the 25 years he’s owned the team. Johnson was open about his discontent with the 7–10 record with which the Jets ended last season and made it clear that he expected a marked improvement from Saleh during this season, which apparently did not transpire.
Despite the presence of Aaron Rodgers, back this season after a torn Achilles sidelined him for the 2023 season, the Jets have continued to struggle on offense. Saleh’s tenure was notable for its strong defense and weak offense, which experts have chalked up to the six quarterbacks Saleh ran through in just four seasons.
Saleh’s fate was seemingly sealed after the Jets’ disastrous 23–17 loss to the Minnesota Vikings in London on Sunday, during which Rodgers threw three interceptions and the offense struggled mightily.
Saleh had one year left on the contract he signed in 2021. Jeff Ulbrich, the Jets’ defensive coordinator, will act as the interim head coach until a permanent replacement is chosen.
