British woman ‘stabbed after being ambushed’ in Spain
A British woman was stabbed during an robbery in the coastal region of Costa Brava in northeastern Spain.
She was with a group when the attack happened in the early hours of Monday in the resort of Lloret de Mar.
A masked thief ambushed her and another tourist from the UK, separating them from the group.
They demanded their cash and valuables, but it is understood that they refused to comply.
A struggle between the three followed and the woman was stabbed, suffering a deep wound.
Local news website Lloret Gaceta said the victim was ‘bleeding heavily’ when the police arrived to take her to a nearby hospital in the town of Blanes.
A suspect was later arrested near the scene on suspicion of robbery and stabbing her.
A mobile phone belonging to the tourists was recovered during the detention.
This comes just days after a British couple attempted to fend off against a mugger in the island of Magaluf over a designer watch worth more than £67,000.
Police in several parts of Spain have created specialist groups to tackle designer watch muggers, who usually come from Naples in Italy, North Africa or Eastern Europe.
Tennis star Grigor Dimitrov became a victim of the gangs dealing with designer watch muggings in April last year.
The 33-year-old Bulgarian had a £62,000 timepiece ripped off his wrist in his car as he returned from training ahead of the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell tournament.
