Logan County woman sentenced after 30 cats abandoned in May
LOGAN COUNTY, Okla. (KFOR) - A Logan County woman has been sentenced after 30 cats were found abandoned in cages back in May.
On Monday, May 27, 30 cats were found locked in cages and abandoned on the side of the street near Backhaus and West Industrial Roads in Logan County.
According to the Logan Co. Sheriff's Office, the cats ranged from kittens to adults, all left in the sun without food or water.
The cats were rescued by Helping Community Paws and Claws Inc., a nonprofit run by Lisa New.
“Probably a matter of a couple hours and they see they probably would have overheated,” said New. “It doesn’t take much for a cat to get overheated and die.”
Three people were taken into custody in connection to the abandoned cats. Brook, Jason and Keegan Wanzer were arrested as part of the investigation.
Brook Wanzer faced 62 charges including Conspiracy, Animal Cruelty and Animal Abandonment. She was sentenced in October after taking a blind plea deal to multiple years in prison, but will only serve one year in the Logan Co. Jail contingent on good behavior.
She will also have to pay court costs and more than $11,000 in restitution as well as surrender all animals in her care.
