Kyrie Irving’s Most Dynamic Anta Sneaker Yet Is Finally Getting a Release

A pair of moccasin-style basketball sneakers debuted by Kyrie Irving during the Western Conference Finals is finally set to release.

The Anta Kai 1 “Chief Hélà” is a tribute to Irving’s Native American heritage and is titled after the Lakota name given to him by the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe in 2018. Brown and gold form the monochromatic sneaker intended to invoke the earth, as “Héla” translates to “Little Mountain,” while a suede fringe collar connects the performance basketball shoe with moccasins.

Charlote Mountain, Irving’s thuwin (or auntie) and a member of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, said in a press release: “Kyrie Irving’s deep connection to our Lakota heritage shines through in every step of his journey, and the ‘Chief Hélà’ shoe is a reflection of that bond. The shoe carries not just the spirit of the land, but the strength and wisdom of our people. By honoring his Lakota name, ‘Hélà,’ Kyrie is helping to share our culture with the world in a way that celebrates both tradition and progress.”

Irving first wore the “Chief Hélà” edition of his first signature sneaker from Anta during a Game 1 victory over the the Minnesota Timberwolves. The Dallas Mavericks would go on to win that series before falling to the Boston Celtics in the NBA Finals.

Irving’s later mother was a member of the Standing Rock Sioux and lived on the reservation prior to her adoption. The star point guard uses the “Hélà” name for his social media profiles, and his Kai 1 sneaker incorporates design elements from both Native American and African motifs.

A retooled Anta Kai 1 Speed sneaker without a strap recently released in a colorway designed by Irving’s father, and his line will soon grow to include the Kai Tribe, a $70 skate shoe.

The Anta Kai 1 “Chief Hélà” will release Saturday, October 12, through Anta’s website via a drawing that is now open, as well as select third-party retailers. Pricing is set at $125.
