Iran warns Gulf States against allowing Airspace for Military strikes: Senior official
Tehran has informed Gulf Arab states that it would be “unacceptable” if they allowed their airspace or military bases to be used against Iran and warned of retaliatory action.
A senior Iranian official stated that Gulf states balancing oil markets in case Israel attacks Iranian energy facilities was not part of their current discussions, Reuters reported.
The comments come amid fears of potential Israeli retaliation following last week’s Iranian missile attack, as Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi visits Gulf states for talks.
Last week, Iran engaged in discussions with Gulf Arab capitals during an Asia conference in Qatar, where Gulf states sought to reassure Iran of their neutrality in any conflict with Israel.
Iran emphasized that any action by a Gulf country against Tehran, including allowing the use of airspace or military bases, would be regarded as a collective action by all Gulf states, warranting a response from Tehran.
The Iranian message highlighted the importance of regional unity against Israel and maintaining regional stability.
Tehran clearly stated that any assistance to Israel, such as permitting the use of a Gulf country’s airspace for actions against Iran, is unacceptable.
U.S. President Joe Biden is expected to discuss potential plans to strike Iran with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as the U.S. considers how to respond.
Biden had mentioned that alternatives to striking Iranian oil fields should be considered, indicating reluctance to support an attack on Iranian nuclear sites.
Tehran has not engaged in discussions regarding Gulf oil producers raising output if Iranian oil production were disrupted during escalations.
Iran’s warnings to Gulf states reflect heightened regional tensions, with Tehran closely monitoring any actions that could be interpreted as support for Israeli retaliation. Despite recent rapprochements, the fragile political relationships between Iran and its Gulf neighbors are at risk of further deterioration, making diplomatic dialogue crucial for maintaining regional stability.
The involvement of the U.S. and the potential for military escalations only add to the situation’s complexity.
