Dozens of Dems team up to push Mike Johnson to call Congress back into session: report

A group of more than 60 House Democrats joined together Wednesday to urge House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) to “immediately” address aid for Hurricanes Helene and Milton and call Congress back into session, according to a report in Axios.

The letter, signed by 63 House Democrats, comes as lawmakers fear the active storm season will drain emergency agencies’ budgets before lawmakers are due back in Washington next month, Axios reported.

The publication notes that no Republicans signed onto the letter, even as some GOP lawmakers called for the House recess to be cut short to respond to the storms. But Johnson, according to Axios, said “it will take some time” for states to calculate the extent of their financial need.

While the House speaker pointed out the $20 billion FEMA received from the stopgap spending bill passed by the House last month, according to the Axios report, the Democrats, in their letter, argued the stopgap money “will not suffice.”
