Channel 4 to recreate shocking motorway pileup and life-threatening car crashes for ‘ground-breaking’ new show
CHANNEL 4 is set to to recreate a shocking motorway pileup and life-threatening car crashes.
The commercial broadcaster will air the huge events for a ‘ground-breaking’ new show.
Commissioners have given the green light to a new feature-length documentary.
Blink Films will soon begin work on the show, which has been given the working title, Pile-Up.
The programme will recreate a pile-up of vehicles on a motorway to look at exactly what occurs.
It will take a second-by-second-look at what happens to the multiple motor cars and vans involved, as well as their occupants.
The new Channel 4 factual programme is meant to be ‘intentionally triggering’ for viewers, according to TV Zone.
All different types and sizes of cars will be examined including lorries and vans as the documentary will film and scientifically analyse the crash.
Experts from the Advanced Vehicle Engineering Centre at Cranfield University will work with the production team to create a full-scale, high-speed pile-up.
They will work with everyday vehicles and drivers to investigate the crash in forensic detail.
Advanced remote control driving technology will be used alongside mannequins and state of the art specialist cameras.
As specialists conduct their new experiment, they will try to reveal the answers to questions around the physics of a huge crash.
They will look into how different drivers actually behave in the horrific situation.
Experts will also explore how successful safety and automated systems can be to protect drivers.
The show will also explore what types of vehicles will provide the best protection for road users.
Bosses have given a sneak preview of what viewer can expect, they teased the programme would provide the ‘ largest road traffic experiment ever staged’.

- Another national treasure, The Great British Bake Off welcomes a group of 12 amateur bakers to put their culinary skills to the test with Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith judging their efforts. One contestant is eliminated each week until the final three face off in the last week.
Bake Off: The Professionals
- Bake Off: The Professionals puts a twist on GBBO, pitting two teams of professional pastry chefs against each other in every episode. It’s up to judges Benoit Blin and Cherish Finden to determine who has what it takes to make it through to the final.
The executive producer of the project Dan Chambers explained: “Pile-Up will be the largest road traffic experiment ever staged anywhere in the world.
“Not only will it be an incredible television event, more importantly it provides a once-in-a-lifetime chance to unravel the science of deadly motorway crashes.”
Danny Horan is Head of Factual at Channel 4 and he said the show would be “a world first.”
Adding: “This gripping and dramatic television event is a world first – a meticulously planned and staged experiment that will use the most innovative technology available to examine what really happens in a multi vehicle pile-up.
“This spectacular TV documentary will give us a detailed breakdown of what happens in those seconds before and after a collision, allowing Channel 4 viewers a unique perspective and never-before-seen detail.”
Pile-Up will come to Channel 4 at a later date.
