Geomagnetic storm to possibly impact technology in NYC

NEW YORK (PIX11) – A severe geomagnetic storm may impact technology throughout New York City between Thursday and Friday, the Office of Emergency Management warned.

According to the agency’s social media post, the solar storm could impact infrastructure like power grids, GPS, and communication devices.

While city officials say the general public doesn’t need to take any action, they suggest New Yorkers sign up for Notify NYC alerts and keep an emergency bag handy with an AM radio.

Geomagnetic storms are caused by large amounts of plasma ejecting from the outermost layer of the Sun's atmosphere, according to NOAA’s website

Although the storm is expected to impact technology it can also offer opportunities to see the aurora in some parts of the country.

Reports from NASA show the last solar storm to hit Earth was in May 2024, which brought unusually low-latitude auroras worldwide.
