The snooze button should be large and easy to find. Also, most people don't want to have to remember to turn on their alarm clock every day, so we don't recommend the Lumie Bodyclock Shine 300, which also had many confusing buttons and was just a clunky experience, overall.

Size: Since most people keep alarm clocks on their bedside tables, they shouldn't be overly large. But the display should still be clear and large.

There should be multiple options for sound and brightness that you can select on the device. How we tested sunrise alarm clocks

We used each alarm for at least five days to test their features and performance.

As a certified sleep science consultant with extensive experience in both sleep research and product testing, I conducted hands-on evaluations of 11 different sunrise alarm clocks. In addition to my expertise, we consulted with sleep experts Dr. Alex Dimitriu, founder of Menlo Park Psychiatry and Sleep Medicine, Dr. Chris Winter of Charlottesville Neurology and Sleep Medicine, and said Kelly Waters, MD, a sleep specialist at Spectrum Health. Over five consecutive nights with each device, we thoroughly assessed the following key factors:

Sleep quality testing: I personally slept with each device for five consecutive nights, noting factors such as how smoothly the sunrise alarm clock woke me up, how gentle and gradual the light felt, and whether the device woke me up on time. I also noted whether I experienced any sleep inertia and how refreshed I felt in the morning with each device.

User-friendliness: I took notes on how easy or difficult the setup was, how intuitive the device was to use, whether it worked with an app or manually, and which devices included easy-to-follow instructions.

Brightness options: I tested the range of brightness settings on each device, noting light intensity and brightness levels, as well as how well the gradual lights performed.

Sound options: I evaluated the sound quality based on how soothing or jarring it was, noted the available sound options, and evaluated whether they were gentle enough to avoid abrupt awakenings.

Dimmable Display: I checked whether the clock's display could be dimmed but also turned off completely for total darkness. This is important because even the smallest amount of light can interfere with sleep quality.

Backup Power: To ensure that the alarm clock would function in the event of a power outage, I checked to see which devices included backup batteries.

The Philips SmartSleep Connected is a relatively large sunrise lamp that resembles a glowing donut. It's controlled almost entirely from an app (available for iOS or Android) that allows you to customize "wind-down" and "wake-up" profiles with your preferred sound, light intensity, and duration. I found it intuitive to use.

The stunning sunset simulation was my favorite feature: The brightness gradually decreases from beautiful hues of bright yellows to soft reds over the course of five to 60 minutes. This is accompanied by your choice of four natural relaxing sounds (or FM radio) that fade away with the sunset. 

I've used the Philips SmartSleep Connected for months and love waking up to "summer birds" and an "island red" sunrise with warm red and orange lights distributed nicely throughout the bedroom. The combination made me feel like I was on vacation.

The device tracks your sleep habits and lets you know if your bedroom is too hot, humid, bright, or loud for optimal sleep. Other features include guided meditations, a night light, backup battery, USB charging dock, an AUX cord to play music from your phone, and a reading light. Unfortunately, you can't connect via Bluetooth. All this customizability comes at around $200.

A less expensive option from Philips, the SmartSleep Wake-Up Light has fewer customizable options and features than the Philips SmartSleep Connected and is completely manual; no app needed. I recommend this one if you're looking for something simple but still high-quality and efficient. Its offers impressive colored sunrise simulations and relaxing sunsets for about half the price of our top pick.

I had no problem setting the time and alarms with the easy-to-follow instructions. Falling asleep to this lamp was very relaxing; the sunset simulation therapy works just as well as the Philips SmartSleep Connected. The display automatically dims as the room gets darker, great for cocooning yourself in total darkness.

Waking up with this lamp was such a pleasant experience. The gradual and natural sunrise simulation increased over the span of 30 minutes until it completely flooded my bedroom with beautiful, rich, orange-and-yellow lights and the gentle sounds of "Nepal bowls."

You can choose from five natural wake-up sounds, including "birds" and "ocean waves," or your preferred FM radio station. The snooze feature is unique: A single slight tap anywhere on the device snoozes the lamp for nine minutes.  

It did a great job at waking me up and feeling refreshed in the morning.

I prefer this Philips model's smooth, spherical shape and smaller size over the Philips SmartSleep Connected, although I wish it connected to the app for more customization. I missed the extra features in the Philips SleepMapper app when I used this model, like the sleep-environment monitoring and extended customization. I hope Philips comes out with a new sunrise alarm clock that features all of the Philips SmartSleep Connected options but is shaped like this model to simulate that beautiful, natural sunrise.
