Hermes airport giving out free trees to the public

Hermes airports is offering free plants and trees to the public on Saturday, the airports’ operating company said in an announcement on Friday.

The trees will be distributed at Larnaca airport between 10am-12pm as part of its ‘Green Lemonade’ project.

Free parking will be provided.

The initiative is a “green collaboration” started with beverage company Kean in 2022, for which lemons are collected from trees near the airport and turned into preservative-free lemonade, then sold as a fundraiser for environmental actions.

“Each year we collect the lemons from the 120 lemon trees at the airport’s outdoor areas. The lemons are delivered to the Kean factory in Limassol [and turned into lemonade sold to passengers and airport staff], with proceeds used for environmental initiatives,” Hermes said.

These include donation of a training drone for fire monitoring to the Cyprus Forestry Department, in collaboration with The Cyprus Institute.

“This year Hermes and Kean joined forces with Foody, which is selling homemade lemonades on its platform,” Hermes added. Proceeds from this year’s sales will also cover the plants provided to the public.

“Through our collaboration with Kean and Foody, we are expanding the impact of the initiative, giving more people the opportunity to contribute to the protection of the environment,” Hermes airports communications director Mari Kouroupi said.
