Friends tried to resuscitate the 67-year-old before rescue teams arrived to find the man already unconscious on the outskirts of the town of Diakopto.

Police, the fire department and an ambulance were quickly brought to the scene to assist.

He was later pronounced dead at the Kalavryta Hospital.

The man has not been identified yet.

The 67-year-old and his friends were hiking through the gorge, hoping to capture shots of NATO fighter jets flying overhead on the last day of drills.

Photographers were invited to attend NATO exercises on October 1 and 8.

Local firefighters posted on Twitter/X this morning but only confirmed that one man had been injured near the local caves.

“An unconscious man was transported from a difficult location in the Kalavryton mega cave area and handed over to the EKAB (emergency teams).

“(They brought) seven firefighters with two vehicles.”

Police are working to establish the cause of death, with initial investigations suggesting he may have been suffering from an illness, per local media.

The body will be transferred to Patra, where an autopsy will be conducted.

It comes after a British tourist tragically died in Crete after feeling unwell during a swim last month.

The 71-year-old reportedly collapsed at Ammoudi beach in Rethymno.

The tourist who was on holiday on the island went for a swim at the beach on Sunday afternoon.

She started feeling unwell so she made it to the shore where she collapsed, Creta post reports.

An EKAB ambulance rushed to the scene and rescuers attempted to revive her but to no avail.

The woman was taken to the Rethymnon hospital where she was pronounced dead.

A preliminary investigation is carried out by the Port Station of Agia Galini.

Earlier this month another Brit holidaymaker was pulled dead from the sea off a remote South African beach after rescuers raced to save him.

The 47-year-old had been swimming off the Cape Vidal nature reserve beach on the Indian Ocean coast on Sunday when he was spotted struggling to stay afloat.

A British teenager was left fighting for his life after nearly drowning at a Majorcan water park.
