Women are prominently present at the Pashtun tribal assembly, even as the Taliban in Afghanistan have excluded women from all forms of political and social participation. The Taliban justify this exclusion by claiming that women’s involvement in politics and society is incompatible with Afghan “culture” and Islam.

Ali Amin Gandapur, the Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, has promised to present the concerns and demands raised at the assembly to the federal government of Pakistan.

In recent days, there has been controversy over the organization of the Pashtun tribal assembly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Just before the three-day assembly, the Pakistani government declared the Pashtun Tahafuz Movement a banned organization.

In response, the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has expressed its support for the Pashtun assembly and declared a five-day ceasefire in honor of the gathering.
