Mindy Kaling Reveals the ‘Forbidden’ Style Her Daughter Kit Is Obsessed With in Super-Rare Interview

Mindy Kaling’s eldest daughter, Katherine “Kit,” is already so much like her mom and is already becoming quite a fashionista like her!

In a recent interview with People, Kaling talked about how her six-year-old daughter Kit is already loving all things makeup and fashion. In fact, she really adores the extravagant looks, especially ballgowns.

“She has a really specific vision of what she thinks is pretty and what she doesn’t,” she said. “[A dress is] not glamorous to her unless it touches the ground. I think it’s because you’re not allowed to wear evening-length gowns to first grade. So it’s like the forbidden. So when I go out, if I’m just wearing a minidress, she’s like, ‘It doesn’t touch the ground. It’s not beautiful.’ So she has a lot of strong opinions.”

Kit may only be six years old, but it’s clear she’s turning into a mini stylist for her mom. Along with loving certain types of fashion, she’s also already loving makeup, which Kaling wasn’t prepared for at all.

“I had thought that I was going to wait until my daughter was 13 or 14 years old before she even started getting interested,” she said. “But on extremely special occasions, we’ll do a little eyeshadow for her birthday party. Because I know that’s a slippery slope. Then it’s like, ‘Well, what about Friday?’ You’re like, ‘No, no.’ But I think of it more as fun face paint, costume-type stuff with her that we do once or twice a year and she absolutely loves it.”

While Kaling ensures her children keep their privacy from the public eye, we’re sure when the time comes, her daughter Kit will show everyone her ultra-cool style, just like her mom’s.

For those who don’t know, Kaling has three children named Katherine “Kit,” born in Dec 2017, Spencer, born in Sept 2020, and Anne, born in Feb 2024.

In a previous interview with SheKnows, Kaling talked about how her two eldest children’s personality differ so much, even back then.

“So my my daughter is very funny and very smart and is affectionate, but it’s really kind of on her terms. And my son is so smiley and bubbly that — for the first year of my daughter’s life as a baby, if you gave her to somebody else, she would start screaming because she only wanted to be around her people,” she said. “But my son, if I give my 4-month-old son to a stranger, he’ll be like, ‘great, this is my mom now, bye!’ I think he’s just he’s really happy with strangers. He’s just a little bit more of a chill, easygoing kid.”
