Daniels returns at QB, but Stanford can’t keep up with No. 11 Notre Dame

Stanford suffered its third straight blowout defeat Saturday, allowing 49 unanswered points in a 49-7 loss at No. 11 Notre Dame.

The Cardinal (2-4) scored on its opening drive, keyed by a 27-yard run from Ashton Daniels, but never came close to scoring after that. Meanwhile, Notre Dame (5-1) scored touchdowns on seven of eight possessions until kneeling down to close out the game.

Daniels returned from a one-game absence due to a lower leg injury, but it didn’t help jumpstart the offense. He finished 8 of 13 passing for 74 yards and ran 14 times for 42 yards.

Notre Dame QB Riley Leonard was 16 of 22 passing for 229 yards and three scores, and Notre Dame added 229 yards rushing and four scores.

Stanford was coming off a 40-14 loss at Clemson and a 31-7 loss at home to Virginia Tech. It next hosts No. 25 SMU Saturday at 5 p.m.

The game was delayed by an hour after the third quarter due to weather.
