WATCH: Suryakumar Yadav’s respectful geasture towards Mahmudullah after last T20I game

New Delhi: Suryakumar Yadav paid tribute to Mahmudullah during the third T20I between India and Bangladesh on Saturday (October 12) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium. Mahmudullah, the last of Bangladesh’s “Big 5,” which includes Tamim Iqbal, Mashrafe Mortaza, Shakib Al Hasan, and Mushfiqur Rahim, announced his retirement from T20Is.

Mahmudullah finished his T20I career being the second prolific run-getter for Bangladesh, scoring 2,444 runs in 141 matches, with an average of 23.50 and eight fifties, the highest individual score being 64 not out. During the last series of his T20I, Mahmudullah against India amassed 50 runs in three games at an average of 16.67.

On Sunday, Mahmudullah played his final T20I innings, scoring eight runs off nine balls, including a four. He was dismissed while attempting to hit Mayank Yadav down the ground, caught by Riyan Parag. As Mahmudullah walked off the field for the last time, Suryakumar Yadav approached him and gave him a pat on the back, acknowledging his contribution to the game.

Bangladesh concluded their tour of India on a disappointing note, suffering a 3-0 defeat in the T20I series. After lackluster performances in Gwalior and Delhi, they faced a heavy 133-run loss in the final match in Hyderabad. This came after their earlier 2-0 defeat in the Test series, marking a challenging tour for the Tigers.

India then decided to bat first. They managed to post 297/6 after their innings. Mahmudullah took two overs with a cost of 26 runs but could take one wicket of Suryakumar Yadav who made a knock of 75 runs. Towhid Hridoy showed resistance for Bangladesh by hitting a 63-run knock off 42 balls, including five fours and three sixes, but Bangladesh could manage only 163/7 by the end of their innings.

Mahmudullah, who had resigned from Test cricket in July 2021, has now bid the T20Is goodbye. Mymensingh-born cricketer wants to continue his life in the international game in ODIs, and eyes an outing in the Champions Trophy next year.
