Jeremy Strong doesn’t miss playing Kendall Roy on ‘Succession’: “It f—ed me up”
The rest of the world may miss “Succession,” but Jeremy Strong does not. In an interview with The Times of London, Strong says playing tortured media mogul Kendall Roy on the HBO series was hard on him, and while he’s grateful for the experience, he’s glad it’s over. “It f–-ed me up,” the Emmy winner says.
The interviewer describes Strong seeming more relaxed than he has in previous interviews. Since “Succession” ended, the actor says he has “rediscovered play” after he “sometimes lost touch with joy” while working on the show.
“That show was an incalculable gift. The material a banquet. So I miss that. But Kendall’s struggle was difficult to carry for seven years. And there’s just so much more I want to do,” he said, adding that he has no interest in reprising the role for a revival or spinoff. “It’s not something I have any wish to do any longer. I’m aware it is one of the main chapters of my life, but I don’t miss it.”
Since “Succession” ended in 2023, Strong has returned to Broadway, winning a Tony Award for his performance in “An Enemy of the People” this year, and taken on a challenging film role in the controversial drama “The Apprentice.” He is earning Oscar buzz for his performance as notorious attorney Roy Cohn in the film, which is about Cohn’s mentor-mentee relationship with young Donald Trump (Sebastian Stan) in the 1970s and ‘80s. If he is nominated, he will likely compete against his former TV brother Kieran Culkin, who is a Best Supporting Actor frontrunner for his performance in “A Real Pain.” Try as he might, Jeremy Strong can never really get away from “Succession.”
