Vicario one of Tottenham’s leaders

While there has been a lot of focus on Vicario’s shortcomings when dealing with set-pieces, there is no doubt that the goalkeeper has been a tremendous addition to the North London side since arriving from Empoli last summer.

Not only does he regularly pull off important saves but he is also crucial to the way Ange Postecoglou’s men play out from the back.

The Italian has also emerged as a leader on the pitch, being added to the club’s leadership group by the Australian coach this season.

Vicario’s admission

Ahead of winning his third cap for Italy in their Nations League clash against Israel, the goalkeeper confessed that he has become a better player since making the big switch to N17.

When asked about his learnings at Tottenham, Vicario told TuttoMercatoWeb: “It is a different experience for me, as I also had to learn another culture and style of football. It is all valuable experience that makes me a better athlete.”

The Spurs number one also confessed that he has really enjoyed having his first taste of European football with the Lilywhites this season.

He added: “Participating in a European competition for the first time is teaching me a lot too, as there is a higher tempo and more intensity. I am experiencing things I hadn’t before and that is all valuable.”

Italy’s potential number one?

Vicario is now pushing the experienced Gianluigi Donnarumma to be the Azzurri’s starting goalkeeper and there is no reason why he cannot displace the PSG star if he continues on the same trajectory.

The fact that Luciano Spalletti has handed the Tottenham man a start over Donnarumma in an important game against Israel is proof that the former Napoli coach rates the 28-year-old highly.
