While the experienced Gianluigi Donnarumma remains Italy’s first-choice at the moment, there is no doubt that the Tottenham man is pushing the PSG star for a starting birth.

There have been growing voices in Italy calling for the 27-year-old to get more opportunities and he is all set to earn his third cap for his country this evening as the Azzuri host Israel in the Nations League.

It is also set to be Vicario’s competitive debut for Italy – a major milestone in his flourishing career.

Proud moment

Vicario has had a substantial rise over the last few years, going from playing in the Serie B just three years ago to now being considered to be one of the best goalkeepers in the country.

The Tottenham man explained that it will be a particularly special feeling when he walks out at the Bluenergy Stadium in Udine this evening as he was born in the city.

Vicario told TuttoMercatoWeb ahead of the game: “I come from this city, it is emotional for me to see friends and family in the stadium, it means a lot. Coming here wearing the Azzurri shirt where my childhood dream started is just indescribable.

“I am slowly starting to realise just what tomorrow evening will be for me and all those who know me here. I am proud of the journey my career has taken me on and being here representing Italy just reminds me of all the steps along the way.”

Vicario could soon be number one

The fact that Luciano Spalletti is handing Vicario starts in important matches suggests that he does not think there is a lot separating the Tottenham man and Donnarumma.

If the former Empoli man continues to impress, there is no reason why he cannot displace the PSG star as the Azzuri’s number one.
