ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Happy Tuesday! Meteorologist Matt Mackie says this Tuesday will bring more clouds and stray showers in the north with temperatures in the mid-to-high 40s throughout the NEWS10 viewing area.
A Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute student played a small part in NASA's Europa Clipper spacecraft liftoff. Also, the Scotia community has come together after a small bakery was broken into. These stories, and more, are in your five things to know this Tuesday.
1. RPI and NASA on a mission to Jupiter’s moon
It is a big mission for NASA’s huge spacecraft the Europa Clipper. Traveling nearly two billion miles to Jupiter’s moon, Europa. The ship is NASA’s largest ever to travel through space on this one-of-a-kind mission. It is about the size of a basketball court with its solar wings unfurled. And an R.P.I. undergrad is playing a small part in the massive undertaking.
2. Scotia community comes together after bakery break-in
A break-in at Nibble Nosh bakery in Scotia left the owners stunned. But support from the community has lifted their spirits and their sales.
3. Judge disarms NY Concealed Carry Improvement Act
In Buffalo on October 10, U.S. District Judge John Sinatra, Jr. declared unconstitutional a New York law that outlawed bearing arms on private property without the consent of the property owner. Extensively citing recent U.S. Supreme Court decisions, Sinatra ruled that the Second Amendment lets New Yorkers carry firearms even in such scenarios, so long as it’s private property that’s open to the public.
4. Capital Region eatery now franchising nationwide
Tipsy Moose Tap & Tavern is now expanding into a national franchise model. The local restaurant chain has locations in Latham, Troy, and Albany.
5. Coxsackie-Athens cancels remainder of varsity football season
The Coxsackie-Athens Central School District has canceled the remainder of the season’s varsity football games. The district said they do not have enough student-athletes to meet the minimum participation requirements set by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association.
