Student injured in brawl after North Vermilion High homecoming football game
VERMILION PARISH, La. (KLFY) -- What was supposed to be a night to celebrate a big homecoming win for the North Vermilion High Patriots against the Comeaux High Spartans turned into chaos after a fight between the teams erupted after the game.
The fight happened during the post-game handshake between both teams.
News 10 obtained footage from the Abbeville Meridional showing some of what took place.
Sources told News 10 that a social media trend could have resulted in the fight. The trend is when a football team grabs towels or belts after the game and hits the losing team's players from behind during the handshake. However, there is no confirmation that this is the cause of the fight because the investigation remains ongoing.
The Vermilion Parish Sheriff's Office said at least one student was transported to a nearby hospital from the stadium where he was released the same night.
The Vermilion Parish Sheriff's Office and the Lafayette Parish School Board said they are actively gathering information on the incident to determine the root cause of the fight as disciplinary actions may follow.
