62-year-old Kaplan resident killed after crash involving 18-wheeler
KAPLAN, La. (KLFY) -- A 62-year-old Kaplan resident was killed Sunday night in a vehicle crash involving an 18-wheeler on La. Highway 14 near Pirates Lane, according to Louisiana State Police.
The crash claimed the life of 62-year-old Mitchell Livings.
According to state police, Livings was driving a 2016 Toyota Highlander west on La. Highway 14. A 2001 Kenworth 18-wheeler was also traveling west and was in front of the Toyota.
At around 11 p.m., the Toyota failed to slow down and struck the rear of the Kenworth's trailer, state police said. It is unknown at this time why the Toyota failed to slow down.
Livings was not restrained and sustained fatal injuries. Livings was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.
The driver of the Kenworth was uninjured.
State police said that while the cause of this crash remains under investigation, distracted and inattentive driving is a leading cause of crashes in Louisiana.
"Louisiana State Police urges all motorists to stay alert while driving. Additionally, while not all crashes are survivable, proper use of seat belts can greatly decrease the chances of serious injury or death. Always ensure every occupant is properly restrained. Every trip. Every time," state police said in a news release.
