Worthington middle school closed due to threat: What we know
WORTHINGTON, Ohio (WCMH) -- A Worthington middle school announced it is closed on Tuesday after police were notified of social media threats.
The social media threats have since been traced to a Snapchat user in California.
The Worthington School District said the Columbus Police and Counter-Terrorism Units investigation has led them to trace a Snapchat user to California. They are now coordinating with local authorities there to continue the investigation.
The detectives have assessed that there is no direct threat to McCord or any other Worthington Schools, the district said.
McCord Middle School is not in session Tuesday after the school district was notified Monday night of the threats. The school was "out of an abundance of caution".
The district said it received reports from students and parents that a member of a Snapchat group on Monday threatened to carry out a shooting at the school.
Columbus police, along with the Counter Terrorism Unit, was put in contact with the families that saw the threat and is investigating the threat. Worthington and Columbus police officers were called to school grounds Tuesday morning. The school district said parent-teacher conferences will go on as scheduled.
Additional police presence has been requested Tuesday evening during conferences to provide additional peace of mind.
