Watch: Trump responds to question about deficit by rambling about Air Force One

Former President Donald Trump on Tuesday responded to a question about reducing the federal budget deficit by uncorking a rambling answer about the state of Air Force One.

During an interview with Bloomberg Editor-in-Chief John Micklethwait at the Economic Club of Chicago, Trump was asked specifically what steps he would take to cut government spending in his second term.

Instead of answering the question directly, Trump talked about a time when he haggled down Boeing for what it planned to charge the federal government for a new Air Force One.

"When I first sat down, a general came into my office and he said, 'Sir, it's nice to meet you, would you please sign this?' I said, 'What is it?' It's a contract for a new Air Force One, which is actually a contract for two planes, not one, two Boeing 747s," Trump began. "And I said, 'How much is it?' $5.7 billion. That's a hell of an expensive plane, but there's reasons for that. I said, nope, I'm not signing it. Who negotiated it? Barack Hussein Obama. I said I'm not signing it. Why? Because there's a lot of fat."

Although Trump seemed to be telling a story about rejecting an Air Force One contract for being too expensive, he then said that the United States needed a new Air Force One that was as luxurious as the ones flown by the Saudi royal family.

"But we should have a new Air Force One," he said. "When we see these planes from Saudi Arabia, brand new, and ours is, like, 32 years old, and it's a very different plane, it's a much smaller plane, the whole thing. The United States should have the best plane, I will tell you."
