Ex-Fox News host calls out Bret Baier's excuse for airing 'wrong' Trump clip

A former Fox News host called out current host Bret Baier on Thursday night over Baier's explanation of why he aired an edited clip of Donald Trump's "enemy from within" remark during a contentious interview with Vice President Kamala Harris.

The clip of Baier trying to push back against Harris became the subject of criticism Wednesday night after the Fox News host tried to press Harris by asking her if she believes that Trump's supporters are "stupid."

After Harris said, "Oh, God, I would never say that about the American people," she pointed out the same couldn't be said of her GOP opponent, who has called his critics and foes "enemy from within."

But Baier tried to push back and played a clip of Trump — that left out the relevant part of the quote.

"They were saying I was threatening, I'm not threatening anybody," Trump said in the edited clip. He then said he was the target of the "weaponization of government."

But seconds before that section, Trump defended his language of calling critics the "enemy from within" and said a "strong president" is necessary to "handle" those people, whom he characterized as "sick" and "evil."

Harris called out Baier for the clip and insisted it did not accurately represent Trump's statements during a contentious moment.

But on Thursday, Baier admitted he made a mistake.

“Harold, I did make a mistake,” he told Fox News hosts Harris Faulkner and Harold Ford Jr. “And I did want to say that I did make a mistake. When I called for a soundbite, I was expecting a piece of the ‘enemy from within’ from Maria Bartiromo’s interview to be tied to the piece from your town hall, Harris, where you asked the former president about ‘the enemy from within.’ It just had the piece about the town hall."

On Thursday night, Gretchen Carlson, who joined Fox News in 2005 and was a co-host on Fox & Friends until 2013, blasted Baier on X.

"Now Bret Baier says 'his mistake' he ran wrong Trump 'enemy from within' clip during interview w/ Harris. Newsflash: When wrong clips run (which happens) hosts can easily say 'Sorry that was the wrong clip'. He or his producers would have known it was the wrong one right then," she said.
