Ange Postecoglou receives warning after recent comments – ‘They will bite you’

Swedish journalist Tobias Hellgrens warns Ange Postecoglou that some of the statements he is making will come back to bite him at the end of the season.

Ange Postecoglou has been more than happy to put pressure on himself and his team this season by repeatedly asserting their ambitions to win the biggest trophies.

Perhaps the most infamous of those comments so far was his assertion that he always tends to win silverware in his second season at clubs (Sky Sports).

In a recent interview with Optus Sport, the Tottenham boss insisted that he will not adapt his methods just because he is now in the Premier League, confidently declaring that the Lilywhites will be successful playing the way they currently do.

However, Hellgrens believes that the 59-year-old should not be making these statements publicly as neither he nor the club have anything to gain from it.

He insisted that Tottenham are simply not ready to challenge the best sides in the Premier League at the moment and that Postecoglou will be eating his words at the end of the season.

The journalist wrote in Fotboll Skanalen (as translated by Sport Witness): “I love you, Ange. This will bite you in the rear. I find it difficult to understand Ange Postecoglou’s strange out-of-nowhere action recently. Where did it come from? Because so be it. But before that, he has coached domestic giants in Scotland, Japan and Australia at club team level – now he coaches Tottenham.

“And nothing in Spurs’ summer window smacks of a title right away. You smell even less of a title if you sniff the team’s season opener. So, what the hell? What was that statement good for? All it did was raise the bar, putting unnecessary pressure on himself and his squad in the ultra-competitive environment that prevails in the PL’s top tier.

“There is a big chance that Postecoglou will have to eat his words at the end of the season as the results look right now. Right now, Tottenham are not in a position to challenge for the title. The medial ‘calm’ it brings should be embraced instead of mopping up against the currently much better-equipped rival in North London and all other competitors. Don’t cough unnecessarily, Ange. It will just bite you in the ass. If nothing else lead to more – unnecessary – pressure.”

Message intended for players?

Postecoglou’s ultra-attacking and aggressive system relies on a complete buy-in from the players as his philosophy will simply not work if his troops are even a little bit apprehensive.

Perhaps the Tottenham head coach wants to instil belief in the squad by publicly reiterating his confidence in his way of playing. However, doubts will start creeping into the players’ minds if the performances do not translate into consistent results.
