Postecoglou provides update on Cristian Romero’s fitness after just 2 days rest
Cristian Romero has been a busy man this past week, representing Argentina during the international break before rushing back to North London to prepare for Spurs duty this weekend. In his latest press conference, Ange Postecoglou has discussed how the defender is getting on.
Romero is ready for West Ham
Of all the players heading out for international commitments over the last fortnight, Cristian Romero is among the small group to have returned to Hotspur Way last.
The Argentine star arrived back in training on Thursday, after playing for Argentina on Wednesday in a huge 6-0 win against Bolivia.
Discussing the condition of the Spurs vice-captain with the press today (via Football.London), Ange Postecoglou reassured us all that Romero is fit and ready to go for the weekend.
He said: “He’s okay. We’ve got everyone back and the last one was Cristian, Pape [Matar Sarr] and [Yves] Bissouma. They are all good and reported well. We’ve got the early kick-off, so that’s a quick turnaround but we trained this morning and they were all fine.”
Romero has been disappointed with his form
Admittedly, it has not been the best season for Romero so far. The usually solid defender has shown moments of weakness and lapses in concentration throughout the campaign, including costly mistakes against Leicester City and Brighton.
Postecoglou was asked about Romero’s form and how he and the player feel about the performances so far, and the Spurs boss insisted the 26-year-old is still a crucial figure in his team.
He added: “I think Cuti has been and again probably reflective of our season, he’s had some good moments for us and some disappointing moments for him, which I know he hasn’t been happy about himself, but it is tough.
“We’ve spoken about the schedules and it is funny how the guys who didn’t have international commitments, not that there were many of them, they look really refreshed and ready to go.
“Not just for us but in football in general. The amount of travel and amount of games, because he always play Cuti does, we have to bear that in mind and it’s something the players need to learn to cope with the best they can, but he’s still really important for us. He’s an outstanding defender, a great leader in our group and still contributing.”
A big performance needed
I think it’s fair to say many Spurs fans are running out of patience with Romero this season, and there’s definitely an argument to be made that he should be dropped for Radu Dragusin.
I think Romero will start against West Ham, due to the nature of the game, but he simply has to prove he can still be depended upon.
