DEC: Temporary closure to South Lake Road, South Lake Dam
HUNTER, N.Y. (NEWS10)-- The South Lake Road within the North-South Lake Campground and Day Use Area is currently closed for dam maintenance, according to the state Department of Environmental Conservation. Parking at the entrance of the facility will also be limited.
The dam, located near the first parking lot on South Lake Road, will be brought into compliance with NYS dam safety regulations. According to the DEC, the construction will continue until the campground opens in May 2025.
The DEC's website states erosion, animals, trees and brush, and deteriorating drains can lead to safety concerns within dams. It's recommended if there is a dam on a property to inspect it regularly and keep a record of the inspections done.
The site offers a variety of year-round hiking trails, fishing opportunities and popular sites, like Alligator Rock and the former Catskill Mountain House. According to the DEC, North-South Lake is the biggest and most used State campground in the Catskill Forest Preserve.
