Prominent Republican warns Trump will suppress opponents if re-elected
Liz Cheney, former Republican Congresswoman, has responded to Donald Trump’s remarks about placing her before a firing squad. She warned that if Trump returns to power, he will suppress his opponents.
At a campaign event in Arizona, Trump referred to Cheney and her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, as not supporting his third presidential bid, labeling Liz as “very stupid” and “hawkish.”
During the rally, Trump stated, “Let’s put her out there with a gun and shoot at her with nine guns. Let’s see how she feels when the guns are pointed at her face.”
These comments sparked widespread criticism, with Cheney responding on social media that threatening opponents with death is a sign of dictatorship. She asserted, “We cannot entrust our freedom and country to someone petty, vindictive, unstable, and cruel who wants to be a tyrant.”
The Guardian reported that, according to a new study by the Global Project Against Hate and Extremism (GPAHE), the U.S. may witness an increase in political violence following the presidential elections.
Cheney is one of the most prominent Republicans to openly oppose Trump, harshly criticizing his policies. She played a significant role in leading investigations into the January 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol.
As one of the few Republicans to support Trump’s second impeachment, she faced intense backlash from her party and ultimately lost her seat in Congress.
In the 2024 presidential election, Cheney has endorsed Kamala Harris, the Democratic candidate and current Vice President, framing this support as prioritizing the nation’s interests over party loyalty.
Cheney continues to warn the public about the serious threat Trump poses to freedoms and rights, declaring, “Women will not be silent.” Her stance reflects ongoing concerns about the implications of Trump’s influence on American democracy.
