Louisiana leaders react to Donald Trump winning 2024 US presidential election

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) - Former President Donald Trump is returning to the White House after being elected the 47th president of the United States.

Leaders from Louisiana have reacted to Trump's victory.

Gov. Jeff Landry said this on X, formerly known as Twitter, "The American people sent a RESOUNDING message that they want a government that puts AMERICA FIRST! Congratulations to my friend @realDonaldTrump! Louisiana has been with you from the beginning and we cannot wait to get to work alongside you in the White House! LET’S MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!"

Speaker Mike Johnson said, "We have saved America. The American people have spoken, and President Trump and Senator JD Vance are going to the White House. We are ready to get to work for the American people."

Sen. John Kennedy also gave his thoughts on Trump's victory.

He said, "Congratulations to President Trump! Congratulations to my new Senate and House colleagues! This election was a choice between hope and more hurt. Americans chose hope. Let’s get to work."

Sen. Bill Cassidy congratulated Trump and talked about Republicans taking control of the United States Senate. He said, "Congratulations to President Trump, VP-elect Vance, and their families on the victory. I am excited that Republicans have decisively taken control of the Senate. This creates a great opportunity to advance a conservative agenda!"

Rep. Clay Higgins said, "Trump is now 3-0…"

Congresswoman Julia Letlow also commented on Trump's election win.

She said, "Congratulations to President @realDonaldTrump. I look forward to working with you to make America great again!"

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise released the following statement.

"Last night the American people spoke loud and clear and resoundingly rejected the disastrous far-left direction of the Biden-Harris Administration. As returns continue to come in, it appears that voters have handed Republicans unified control of Washington, with House Republicans expected to hold our majority.

"Starting with President Trump’s overwhelming victory to return to the White House as the 47th President of the United States, we have been given a rare opportunity to jointly confront the challenges our country faces. Despite the difficult map we faced and the heavy outspending from the Democrats, House Republicans defied the odds and did what they said couldn’t be done. This is a testament to our great candidates, battle-tested Members, and the voters who had enough of the inflation, crime, open borders, wokeness and chaos around the world caused by Democrats.

"As we continue to monitor results and ensure every legal ballot is counted properly, as your House Majority Leader I have already begun working with President Trump and Senate Republicans to be ready to deliver on the mandate the American people gave us to fix our country."

The Louisiana Democratic Party released a statement Wednesday.

“Today is a deeply sad, disappointing, and unsettling day for our country and state. Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign and historic candidacy are the best America has ever seen, and we are deeply proud to have stood by her, Tim Walz, and the countless Democrats here in Louisiana and nationwide who believe in everything she stands for. She brought a kind of joy, excitement, and exemplary grace to our political process that inspired and energized so many.

“Even in times like these, there’s no doubt that Kamala Harris’ vision for a better country will remain with us, and we won’t let those dreams die after the dust settles from this election. The enduring principles and ideals of equity, opportunity, justice, and hope will still serve as our driving force — despite the threats posed by Donald Trump, J.D. Vance, Jeff Landry, Mike Johnson, and the extremists who bow down to their every will.

“Here in Louisiana, there are some victories to be proud of yesterday, with the re-election of U.S. Rep. Troy Carter in our 2nd Congressional District, as well as the historic election of Cleo Fields in our newly redrawn 6th Congressional District. Louisiana Democrats will need to work extremely closely with them to push back against the dangers Project 2025 and MAGA Republicans will undoubtedly bring upon us, and hopefully, they’ll be able to make substantial progress in a Democratic majority once the remaining U.S. House races are called.

“Make no mistake — the goals and objectives of the Louisiana Democratic Party are now more vital and important than ever before. We still have the power to fight for the needs, rights, and freedoms of those who are underserved and underrepresented. We will persist and persevere in pursuit of these vital goals with resilience and determination. And we’ll need the help of everyone in Louisiana who cares to do so.”

Attorney General Liz Murrill congratulated Trump in a statement.

"For far too long, the State of Louisiana has been under siege by an ever-growing and widening attack of federal overreach by bureaucrats exercising power never granted by Congress or the Constitution. For the last four years, the hard-working men and women of this State have withstood these relentless assaults on our freedom, faith, industry, culture, and way of life. Yesterday, the American people, and Louisianans by over 60%, chose a different path. I congratulate President Donald Trump and the new Congress on their elections, and I look forward to working with them to move our country and Louisiana forward."
