Human remains found near Lake Tenkiller in Sequoyah County

SEQUOYAH COUNTY, Okla. (KNWA/KFTA) — Deputies with the Sequoyah County Sheriff's Office and other agencies are investigating an area near Lake Tenkiller after human remains were found, according to a social media post.

SCSO said information from a deer hunter led them to the area.

Marshals with the Cherokee Nation, the Oklahoma Medical Examiner's office and District 27 District Attorney's Office were searching through the densely wooded area, SCSO said.

SCSO said "several" human bones have been found as of Friday morning.

"The bones have been found scattered over about a 200 yard area, hopefully we can recover enough to make a positive identification," Sheriff Larry Lane said in the post. "The remains do appear to be pretty old and have likely been here several years."

The department said the search will continues as long as weather permits.

This is a developing story. Stay with KNWA/FOX24 for the latest.
