Spurs receive boost in race for midfielder but still face one roadblock
Tottenham Hotspur have just been handed a boost in the pursuit of their top midfield target, but the player’s wage demands might potentially be a sticking point for the North London side.
Tottenham want to bolster their midfield
Ange Postecoglou has been rotating between different combinations of Dejan Kulusevski, James Maddison, Pape Sarr, Rodrigo Bentancur and Yves Bissouma so far this season.
The Australian has resisted the temptation of using Archie Gray or Lucas Bergvall from the start in any Premier League game so far, with the pair’s minutes primarily coming in the Europa League.
It has now emerged that Postecoglou wants to add another midfielder to his squad in January and will be backed by the Tottenham hierarchy.
Tottenham receive transfer boost
GiveMeSport have now backed up what we have heard from other sources over recent months by claiming that Angel Gomes is one of the names on the top of the Lilywhties’ wishlist.
The report says that the Spurs are keeping close tabs on the Lille star and have now received a boost as they have now found out that the midfielder is eager to complete a switch to the Premier League ahead of next season.
With the England international’s current deal at Stade Pierre-Mauroy running out next summer, it is pointed out that English clubs could agree a pre-contract agreement in January, with Tottenham ready to pounce.
One potential roadblock for Spurs
However, the report points out that Gomes’ wage demands might potentially be a sticking point in the negotiations.
It is thought that the 24-year-old will demand a salary in the region of £150,000 per week, which might put off Tottenham, who are generally cautious about increases to their wage bill.
Besides, the report adds that Spurs would also face plenty of competition for Gomes’ signature, with both Manchester United and Aston Villa also said to be plotting a move for the midfielder.
