Online Refereree Seminar

I keep forgetting to mention, but there will be an online referee seminar in December!

You’ll notice that our fencers have also learned how to referee and they referee their teens in class.  Some of our fencers, middle school, high school, adult fencers, and even parents, have become rated USA Fencing referees.  We often use our teens to help referee non-sanctioned home events, and other clubs have recruited our fencers to referee at their non-sanctioned events.  However, our rated referees can be hired to referee sanctioned events.

For teens, being a rated referee looks good on college and scholarship applications.

For parents, you also get to participate in events your children attend and also help you better understand what your children are doing!  (All our fencers referee in class, but if you are a parent and interested in starting to referee, let us know and we can begin to get you practice.)

The process of becoming a referee:

    1. Take a fencing referee seminar.  There are several seminars offered throughoutOnce the “P” rating has been earned, the candidate may be evaluated for a rating (L1, L2, R1, R2, N1, N2) at a tournament.the year, but very few in North Carolina.  Our referees have taken the Online Referee Seminar by Lisa Campi.  Lisa is a long time friend of the All-American Fencing Academy and the North Carolina fencing community.  This is a 2-day online class right after Christmas.  So if you’re free, we totally encourage doing a referee class!
      Registration and Info: https://www.askfred.net/clinics/d1d06d2a-e041-4bcb-ad2b-fa4f01620008
Class fee:  $80.00 in advance, through December 14.
    2. The next step is successful completion of an online written exam, consisting of a general section and one or more weapon-specific sections, and a score of 90% or greater is required on each section to be awarded a “P” rating.  Students can take the test in only one weapon (foil), but most of our referees take all 3 weapons.
    3. Once the “P” rating has been earned, the candidate may be evaluated for a rating at a tournament.  If we have several fencers that take the online class and complete the test, we organize a tournament for our referees to be observed and evaluated to earn their rating.

If you have any questions about becoming a rated referee, let us know!

We’ve had middle schoolers, high schoolers, adult fencers, and parents all become referees!
