Ange Postecoglou dismisses one key criticism of Tottenham after Ipswich defeat
While members of the press have suggested Tottenham Hotspur are struggling with one aspect of their schedule this season, Ange Postecoglou has played this idea down after the defeat to Ipswich on Sunday afternoon.
A worrying pattern for Tottenham Hotspur
Ange Postecoglou saw his side fall to another disappointing defeat that undoes all of the team’s hard work from last weekend’s big win over Aston Villa, as Spurs lost 2-1 to Ipswich Town at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
That is now the second winless team Spurs have helped pick up their first victory of the campaign, after previously losing to Crystal Palace in a similar scenario.
More worrying, though, is that this is now the third time this season Spurs have lost at the weekend coming off the back of a midweek Europa League game on a Thursday.
That Palace defeat, and the collapse against Brighton just over a month ago all follow the same pattern. It’s also another frustrating defeat heading into the international break, something Spurs have managed to do in all of their previous five games before international fixtures.
Ange Postecoglou doesn’t see impact of Europa League games
Clearly, Postecoglou is not buying into any of these patterns, and speaking to the press after the game today (via Football.London), the Spurs boss denied the schedule is having any impact on his team.
He said: “I shouldn’t think so. I don’t think so. If we were seeing that we’d probably feel it more at the end of games and we’re not feeling it at the end of games. We’re finishing games strongly. We can’t start games like that at this level and expect to overcome the gap that exists between us and the other teams.”
These things don’t happen by coincidence
If these results happened every now and again, you could pass it off as an anomaly, but they’re happening every single time. There’s no way that there’s not a correlation between the Europa League hangover, games heading into the international break, and Spurs coming up against struggling teams. It’s occurring far too regularly to just ignore now.
