Disney Cruise Ship Rescues Four People From a Sinking Boat

A Disney cruise ship performed the dramatic rescue of four boaters who were stranded on a sinking catamaran in Bermuda on Sunday.

The Disney Treasure, the sixth ship in the Disney Cruise Line fleet and the second of three Triton class vessels, was making its way to Port Canaveral in Florida from the Netherlands when it received a Coast Guard broadcast for help. According to ABC 7, the 50-foot catamaran, the Serenity, began taking on water due to gasket failure in the escape hatch, prompting an emergency call from the crew.

The Serenity was about 230 miles off the coast of Bermuda when it began experiencing trouble, and the Disney Treasure was the closest ship nearby at just 80 miles away. When it located the distressed vessel, the cruise ship launched one of its smaller tender boats used for transporting passengers to and from the shore to rescue the stranded boaters.

"We are pleased that the Disney Treasure was able to provide aid to the boat passengers in peril," Disney Treasure Captain Marco Nogara said in a statement to ABC News. "Our crew members worked together on the rescue, skillfully demonstrating their training and commitment to safety."

The Disney Treasure will embark on her maiden voyage on Dec. 21, 2024, from Port Canaveral with a seven-night cruise to the Eastern Caribbean. The ship, which was built with a total of 1,250 staterooms, boasts a design that was "inspired by Walt Disney's love of exploration." The theme of the ship is also adventure, featuring Peter Pan and Captain Hook on the stern.
